Introduction:
There has never been a more perfect time to start your own business. Technology and Social Media has leveled the playing field allowing anyone to create a profitable business.
When you have your own business even if starting it just part time, its 100% yours. No one can take it from you, let your go from it, and you get to make all the choice on how to run it!
Here are 7 Steps on how to start your own business! 👊
It's a romantic idea to have your own business but we need to be clear on what it is we want to do. To simplify the idea is ask what problem to do you want to solve? All businesses solve a problem and fall into 1 of 3 categories with some fitting into more than just one of them:
Health (fitness, mindset, nutrition, etc.)
Wealth (make money, save money, flipping, etc.)
Relationships (dating, communities, family, etc.)
Choose something that you are excited about which will move you towards taking action while also having fun. You don't have to have all the answers, you just have to know where you are going.
Finish this sentence and that should help get initial clarity for what you want to do and who it is for.
I help _______ (market or person) do/get ________ (result or thing they want).
#1 LLC
You can create / register your business LLC on your local states Secretary of State website. Simply search: your state name register llc. You will see ads trying to sell a set up service but its not needed.
The reason you want an LLC for your business is it creates a legal barrier where clients do business with your company and not you, thus adding a layer of protecting from your personal assets. On average it costs around $100 to register and then around $50 each year to renew it.
When you start the process you will see terms like "Articles of Incorporation" which simply means what you business is being created to do and how it will do it. You will also see "Stake or Shareholders" which is you as the owner with 100 shares. There is also a "Registered Agent" which can be you as a noted contact to send LLC renewal and tax information too.
It takes less than 24hours (in some cases instant) to get your LLC approved once you submit your information.
#2 EIN
Think of an EIN (employer identification number) in the same way as your Social Security Number, but the EIN if for your business LLC. After you have the LLC, create the EIN.
Getting an EIN is Free and all you do is go to the IRS site by searching Apply For EIN. Do note need to purchase anything from ads, scroll to find the IRS link and apply online directly.
They will ask a few questions to classify what your business type is and then you are good to go. IT also may take up to 24 hours to get your documents but often its also instant.
Once you have your state LLC information and your EIN you can go into any bank and create a business bank account. This way you have a clear line of business income and expenses that is separate from your personal expenses.
Things like your phone, internet, office equipment, software, and more can start to be paid for from you business before paying yourself meaning pre tax dollars. Plan to set aside a few hundred dollars at minimum when starting this account so you can begin to put business costs on your business bank card.
As a side note you can then set up a free stripe account and use your LLC, EIN and now business bank account. This will allow you to receive online payments from your website sales and have them deposit those funds into your business bank account.
We live in a digital world. Your business needs to be online in some degree or fashion. Depending on what your business is will depict what your online needs are. At minimum you want yo have a website or sales funnel for your clients and potential customers to find you.
For a website you will need tools, but first a domain. I personal use Name Cheap for my domains but there are many others to choose from. Find something easy to spell and ties to your business as a dot com website address. Its could even be your name or the name of the business, but it does not have to fully match your LLC name. Domains general cost about $12 per year
Then you can get a branded email address with that domain for a more professional appearance. Google Workspace and Proton Business Mail are 2 great options to choose from for around $12 a month.
Next you need software to build your site on that domain. Again many options to choose but I would suggest our Solo Link System. It has your website, sales funnels, blog, email & text marketing, booking calendars, membership course areas, social media post scheduler, client invoicing and more all built into one platform. It's everything you need for under $100 a month.
A website allows people to find you, do online transactions, and is a place to drive traffic too from social media content and when the time is right paid online ads. You can choose to outsource the creation of your entire site and tech automations to a designer or even me and my team can assist.
Depending on your needs the site set up can vary from $1000 to $5000 for a full done for you solution. DM me to book a call if you more want details on this.
Once you feel ready its time to go live! The reason I say "feel ready" is sometimes you can sell your offer before you are actually finish making or creating it. You can have a beta or early bird offer saying its coming on such and such date or for those who buy while you build it out all out.
All you need to get going is a simple landing page with what it is, who it serves, the benefits it has and outcomes they can expect. Understand "get going", you and your business will evolve over time, so get something online to offers so you can create cashflow asap.
It may feel like your work is over but in reality its just beginning. Once you have your business created and your site online the next phase is awareness. You have to let people know who you are. Use social media to post content on. Its free to post content, just be creative, test, and most importantly have fun.
Doing new things can feel strange or be intimidating, but with a different lens can be the adventure of a lifetime. Embrace it and document your journey. Show people where you are, what you've come from, and where you are going.
For less than $500 and a little creativity your can start your very own business. For $1000 to $5000 you can outsource the tech design parts. What's cool is think of it like this...
Say you currently have a job making $50,000 a year. The likely hood of a 10% raise or $5000 more a year could be a challenge. With starting your own business on a part time basis you can make $5000 a year by selling only needing to sell an offer that generates $100 a week or $500 a month.
That's four $25 product/service sales a week, one $100 product/service sale a week, or even a single $500 product/service sale a month. What if you did twice as good? That becomes a 20% raise!
Here is a quick checklist to get you started. Remember imperfect action beats inaction every single day, so get started and keep pushing forward...
Choose the type of business your want to create.
Create your LLC with Secretary of State (roughly $100 start, then $50 each year).
Create your Free EIN with IRS.
Open a business bank account (suggest $300 to start minimum).
Make a Free Stripe Account for online payments.
Purchase a business domain on Name Cheap or other online registrar ($12 year).
Get a Google Workspace or Proton Business Mail account for branded email ($12 month).
Invest in a tech stack for your website, funnels, blog, marketing and more (Solo Link $97 Month)
Create your online business site for Free if you do it yourself (can outsource for $1K to $5K).
Open you site to public by posting about it
Then continue to keep to posting about it on social media to drive awareness and traffic!
